Every year in June since 1685 and since the reign of King James II is the well known horse fair in the town of Appleby in Cumbria.
Since then, thirty thousand or more Gypsy Travelers converge at The River Eden and fair hill. The fair is one of the oldest horse fairs in Great Britain.
It is a chance for travelers all from all over the world to meet with friends and relations, and celebrate their similar lifestyles and meet new people. This annual event attended by Romany and Irish families travelling to meet up with old friends, celebrate their music, history and folklore and conduct business, particularly the buying and selling horses and horse related goods. The Fair is a extremely vital and important part of Gypsy culture.
